Licensed trainers in action
Thousands of people have attended our courses on writing scientific papers since they were launched more than 20 years ago. The course has developed significantly and now uses a process-based approach that would-be authors find demystifying, encouraging and practical. The courses regularly receive excellent feedback and, more importantly, have helped hundreds of health professionals along the path to publication: one of our favourite pieces of feedback is, ‘I came on your course with an article that had been rejected by the BMJ. When I rewrote it after the course it was accepted by The Lancet’.
For the past five years a small number of associate trainers have been running this course, also with excellent feedback. Following inquiries we have decided to run another Train the Trainer course, which will give these people a great opportunity to use the materials we have developed to teach the course themselves. We have designed a three-day ‘train the trainers’ course and its goal is to: enable participants to deliver to a good standard our course on Writing a journal article – and getting it published.
By the end of the course participants will be able to
- market the course successfully to organisations and to individual clients
- adopt an organised approach to maximise the chances of a course being successful
- use the start of a course to interest, reassure and motivate participants
- use effective facilitation techniques to assess what participants need and want from the course
- understand our 10-step approach to writing a journal article
- conduct a successful training session and be able to handle difficult people
- maximise motivation and confidence among participants by bringing the course to a positive conclusion
- use our standard feedback form to evaluate the course and interpret the results
- liaise with the customer and carry out post-course support
- use, and where appropriate adapt.. the core teaching material, including tutor's handbook, course notes and overheads
Who should – and should not – attend?
Participants need to be familiar with the world of medical publishing and should have some experience in running teaching or training sessions. They should also be willing to adopt a radical solution to those who want to get their papers published.
The course is not suitable for those who do not intend to run this course themselves, or who are simply looking for long lists of do’s and don’ts to pass on to new writers.
Where and when the course will be held
The course will take place at the White Horse Hotel, Dorking, from 7pm Tuesday 21 May until 4pm on Friday 24 May 2013.
What form the course will take
The one-day version of the course Writing a journal article and getting it published will be given. The rest of the course is divided into four main sections, dealing with:
· marketing and preparing the course,
· understanding the key concepts,
· being able to deliver the course, and
· closing a course and providing subsequent support.
What the course will cost
The cost of the course will be £2,500. This will include tuition, two nights’ accommodation with meals, and a full course pack including, course book, CD of course materials, tutor’s notes, a copy of the book Winning the publications game, and a personal licence to use copyrighted material.
