Your journal and the future

Goal: at the end of the course participants will understand the changing environment of medical journals, and have a shared plan for the future development of their own journal.

Background: The world of medical publishing is undergoing unprecedented change. The current structures are unlikely to last for much longer, and many journals are likely to close. In the evolutionary process, those that grasp the need to change are likely to be those that survive.

At the same time, most medical journals rely on the skills and goodwill of their Editors, most of whom are part-time, with little or no training in basic editorial skills. Yet their support is necessary if changes are to be made. We have developed a one-day course, which is a combination of training and facilitated group work. Its aim is to inform all those involved in the production of a journal of the changes currently taking place - and provides time for them to work out their own solutions. It is an extremely flexible day, and can be adapted to meet the needs of individual journals.

Objectives: at the end of the course participants will have:

  • a clear understanding of the changes being wrought by electronic publishing,
  • a clear understanding of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats their journal faces over the next five years,
  • produced and agreed a plan for future development.

Suitable for: journals that wish to develop. Not suitable for: journals that do not believe they need to make major changes; those who want a course on editing skills.

Course leader: The day is led by Tim Albert FCIPD, principal of Tim Albert Training and a former editor, He is director of the short course for medical journal editors sponsored by the BMJ. He has run this course for editors at titles run by Blackwells, Oxford University Press and the BMJ Group.
